Welcome to Geek Girl Soup—the best movie and TV podcast from a geek girl’s point of view on the Internet!

Susan and Amelia founded GGS in 2011 to share their interpretation of pop culture through a geek girl’s point of view. The first episode of GGS, “Why So Many Remakes?,” was released on November 16, 2011. Susan and Amelia discuss the trend of remaking so many good films and tv shows—with not always good results.

Chris joined the podcast on December 19, 2011 with episode 005 “Introducing the Em City Podcast,” in which the gang discusses the HBO drama series “OZ.” You’ll see over the years that HBO and HBO Max produce some of our favorite shows ever. Kelly joined GGS on January 22, 2012 with episode 006 “Introduction to Gaming,” in which she and Chris discuss all-things-video games (particularly Final Fantasy X and Skyrim).

GGS has welcomed numerous guests over the years. Several times we have interviewed Erika Green Swafford, award-winning writer/producer of “How to Get Away with Murder” and “New Amsterdam.” We have had on numerous times film/TV editor Erik C. Anderson who was the lead editor on “Superstition” and has worked on such films/TV shows as “The Passage” (2019), “Z Nation” (2014), “Mercury Rising” (1998), and “Speed 2” (1997). We interviewed writer Deesha Philyaw whose book “The Secret Lives of Church Ladies” has won several awards, has been picked up by HBO Max, and will be executive produced by Tessa Thompson. 

Outside of the podcast, Susan has interviewed director/actor/producer/writer Mario van Peebles. She has interviewed comic writer Jen Van Meter who is known for “Hopeless Strangers” and “The Death Defying Dr. Mirage,” and horror writer Rhiannon Frater. Additionally, she has interviewed several members of the cast and crew of the TV series “Z Nation.”

We have frequently welcomed as a guest Cort from Pure Fandom with Brad and Cort. She is now a full-fledged Geek Girl, podcasting weekly with Susan and Kelly.

We have covered shows from “True Blood” to “OZ” from “Breaking Bad” to “The Walking Dead.” And, most importantly, there is our annual rewatch podcast of “The Leftovers.” We attend online film festivals, vote in and record about the Film Independent Spirit Awards, and, of course, we cover the Oscars, Emmys, Golden Globes, and other major award shows every year. We have our own very prestigious awards: The Soupies! We also discuss more serious topics, such as the representation of women, people of color, and LGBTQ folks in the film and TV industry. We’ve done a few episodes on the different cinematic theories of time travel and the future of AI (and why we’re nice to Siri).
